SPIRIT
OF BEAUTY
|
|
SPIRIT
of Beauty,
Never shall you escape me.
Through glad or bitter days
Hearten and shape me.
Since first these eyes could see
|
5 |
Still
have they sought you.
Since first my soul knew dream
My dreams have wrought you.
Since first my ears were unsealed
To the whitethroat’s
plaining,
|
10 |
Between
the gusts of the wind
And the low sky’s
raining,
Your voice I hear
In the laughter of leaves,
in the falling
Of waves on an empty shore
|
15 |
| And
a far bell calling.
When I clasp a warm, dear hand
I know you are holding
me.
When I lean to the lips of my love
Your arms are enfolding
me.
|
20 |
And when Night comes
And the faithless senses
forsake me,
Out of my cold, last sleep
You, you shall awake me. |
